This movie began filming in Hawaii and Canada in March 2008. A little more information is available here. The name has changed back (again!) Will plays Sanford B. Dole in this movie. Dole was born in Honolulu to a missionary family in 1844. He later became an attorney, and was a friend of King David Kalakaua and Queen Lili'uokalani, the last reigning monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaii. He would later serve as the only President of the new Republic of Hawaii after the American annexation from 1884 until 1900, and then would continue to serve during this transitional time as first Territorial Governor of the new Territory of Hawaii until 1903, when he accepted an appointment to be U.S. District Court judge. He died in 1926 after a series of strokes. He ashes are interred at Kawaiaha'o church on Oahu. Read about Princess Ka'iulani here. She was to have become Queen of the Kingdom of Hawaii after Queen Liliuokalani, the last monarch of the Kingdom. The U.S. took Hawaii over (by force) before Ka'iulani could ascend to the throne. Princess Victoria Kaiulani Kalaninuiahilapalapa Kawekiui Lunalilo was named for Queen Victoria and would die at the young age of 23 in 1899. The Hawaiian monarchs were always very close with the British. Many of the Hawaiian royal family spent a great deal of time in England attending social functions, furthering their education, and establishing an important place for themselves in global commerce, shipping and more. Princess Ka'iulani spent the majority of her teenage years in England, much of it against her wishes. She believed she had been born under an unlucky star in that her life had been planned out for her and she could never live it as or where she wished. This is a link to a nice article about the movie and the story behind the Princess and her family:
